NUS Career Fair’ 09: The Global Talent Hunt

horizontal-banner-for-blog-copy

It is rational and perfectly normal if you are worrying about landing a job in downtimes like the present. But, worrying would not lead you anywhere if you do not make the first move to prep yourself for what it’s highly likely going to be a search that will test the limits of your endurance and well, optimism. The bulk of us would embark on jobhunting after graduation except the lucky few who manage to land an ideal job before they even graduate.

If you ever wonder how that is possible, it really boils down to these keywords: “Know what you want and why you want it.”

As a final-year student or a fresh graduate, it is imperative that you have already developed a clear and concise answer to that streak of thought. It is only when you yourself know what you want, then you will be able to convince your employer that you will be able to do the job well for them.

Take a moment to chew about this, you will realize it makes sense.

The school career fair is the best place to begin your jobhunt.

WHY?

For one, it is put together with the student ie “YOU” as the focal point. So why put it to waste?

You can find out more from the industry experts, job-hunt together with your friends, trade valuable information, get valuable advice from the consultants, receive free goodie bags (that’s really not the point). The point is at the end of the day, you walk away knowing whether where you stand among the competition.

The recruiters are there to answer whatever queries you have, smooth your reservations about the industry, enlighten you on the current employment climate. Generally, you attain a clearer perspective of your ideal industry after attending the career fair.

False hopes will not lead you anywhere. So get them diagnosed at the career fair and subtract those unrealistic views from your expectations.

This year, you will get to meet over 100 employers from more than 15 industries ( Aviation, Banking and Finance, Education, Engineering, Healthcare, Maritime, Media and Entertainment, Public Service, Oil and Gas, Real Estate and Retail and Services). With more than 3,500 job opportunities available, you definitely do not want to miss this fair!

The next question you might ask, so tell me what’s new?

Unprecedented challenges call for unprecedented action. Hence, the NEW line-ups include:

1. Industry and Career Talks at MPSH 4 – For the 1st time, 14 industry speakers and career experts will share with you the various career prospects in the media and entertainment, retail and marine industries. Other topics include global and local enterprises careers, entrepreneurship, academic careers and skills-based trainings to give you first-hand knowledge on the reality of the job market situation, how to prepare mentally for it and how you may still be successful in your job search in a tight labour market. Click here for the schedule of talks.

2. NUS Career Centre Booth – We will be having our own booth to share with you the career development opportunities and recruitment events that we have for you throughout the year! The NUS Office of Human Resources (OHR) and NUS Enterprise are also at this booth to provide you many job opportunities in NUS and start-up companies.

3. Research and Postgraduate Studies and Opportunities – The Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and School of Computing will also be at the NUS Career Centre booth with information on research/postgraduate studies and opportunities. Come and find out more about research as a career choice.
